She photographed it obsessively, released it to the street, and couldn't paint anything else for six months until this piece emerged. The yellow is pulled directly from the Pantone swatch of that butterfly's wings. The crumbling wall is a literal trace-reference of her grandmother's apartment building-which was demolished two weeks after that morning. The dripping gold is the butterfly's last trajectory: ascending out of decay, but carrying decay with it-unable to separate transcendence from loss.
